  1. Congratulations on your repair. I have done the same thing with threading ribbons :(

  2. I think all of us have mis-installed ribbons many times. I still have problems remembering how Hermes Rockets are threaded. I personally love the Underwood vibrators of the 50's and the Smith Corona vibrators from the 70's - you just swing down the sides, drape the ribbon behind the center and swing back up the side guides.

  4. If I recall that correctly, Continentals have a very complicated system for the ribbon threading. I'm just thinking of a ribbon threading quiz...

  5. Wow, massive typeface on that Olympia! :)

The rule of thumb is that at the printing point, the ribbon should be as close to the platen as possible. On the left you had done that, but on the right the vibrator was between the ribbon and the platen.

    1. Yes, this is a good rule of (inky!) thumb to remember -- thanks. There seem to be a rather wide variety of ribbon-threading styles on these machines.

I've gotten several typewriters from thrift stores whose ribbons were threaded incorrectly, which threw me off. Live & learn!
