Thrift Store Find #1: SCM Coronet Electric

9 comments:

  1. I am jealous of your woods, and the typewriter is nice as well. I've been avoiding electric machines as that path can lead only to madness. I am, however, regretting passing on a functional IBM Selectric II at a thrift store. That thing was just HUGE.

  2. I'm not into electric, I just gave my coronet to Goodwill.

That said, yours is a nice color and cursive too. Good find.

No one else made an equal to the S-C electric portables. Even Olympia and Adler couldn't match the value in those Coronets and their various iterations. The great part is that parts are still quite available because so many were sold. Something's out of adjustment on your left margin. Congratulations! Richard/Texas

  5. @ Dwayne F: I didn't think that madness was confined to collecting just electrics! A slippery slope, indeed.

@ lo-tech: Yes, it is somewhat alarming that my typewriter collecting horizons have broadened. It seems that these SCM electrics are still obtainable in the thrift stores. My parents gave me one for Christmas 1969 and I typed many a word on it for YEARS. So there is definitely an element of nostalgia having found this one.

@ Anon: Thanks, Richard. See paragraph #8.

@ Ur-spo: Thank you for the lovely compliment. The script fonts on typewriters can be difficult to read, but that's part of the charm.

  6. Only 13 typewriters? C'mon, you've got room for 200 more!

Congrats on your new finds. The SM3 will definitely benefit from new bushings. I don't know whether that will fix the spacebar/typebar issue; you may have to do some mild bending there.

  7. I have two SCM's in script and neither resembles that typeface. Interesting how many ways that was done. enjoy it!
